Double Deckles on All Levels!

Double Deckles on All Levels!

I love a deckled edge - it easily adds a softness and is a nice switch up from the normal straight edge.  Whilst it naturally lends itself to a vintage look - its not the only way to go with it.  I have a couple of sets of different deckles already but not circles so I was thrilled with the new Mama Elephant release and grabbed myself the deckled circles to play with.

Whilst they are designed to be solid deckled circles - I wanted to "double deckle" them so you get hoops with deckles on the inside as well as the outside.  Just cut with two at the same time one inside the other - skip a size for a thicker hoop, move it to get an off centre shape - endless possibilities.   I just thought they would make a really pretty background pattern to add to a card.

For my first card I used this technique to create a simple sympathy card - I like them not to be too over-fussy but still look like you put thought into them.  So I used my current favourite blue cardstock - Winter Lake by Altenew - you'll find it in our Pack 1 Collection of their cardstocks - there are SOOOO many shades it just doesn't make financial sense to keep them all in stock individually so we opted to make sample packs.   HOWEVER if you get one then find you LOVE a single shade and want more of it - let us know by email and we'll glady do a special order for you as I did for myself with this yummy shade!

I used the 3 smallest dies in the set all inside of each other and cut them all 3 times.  I placed them around the card til I got a pattern I was happy with - placing one almost fully on the card where I wanted my focal element.  I used a couple of bits of the smallest solid one to add some balance.  I adhered and trimmed off any excess (which can be used in other places or on other cards).

For the focal element I went with a simple die cut flower - BotaniCut Bluebells - die cut from a pale blue and I added some shading with a pencil.  For the sentiment I reached for my go-to for these type of cards, one we never want to make, but need a good set for in our stash - Deepest Sympathy from MFT has been my go to since it was released years ago.  We still have a couple in stock.

I still had a few double deckled hoops left so thought I'd combine them with traditionally layered deckled circles for a second card - this one featuring a fun blue bird - cut in the gaps between the circles on the blue card so zero waste!

I wanted some brighter colours on this one so pulled some scraps of pink from my scrap drawer and cut the two largest circles from them and white from the third.  I layered these up over the remaining hoops which I used to make a scalloped edge.

The bird is The Greetery's Nordic Bird die and has delicious deep etched details on it and is quick to layer with just the wing which has lines on the body to line it up two (I used the largest bird for this one - there are two sizes in the set.)  I used some liquid pearls for eye and beak and then a pink pearl to match the largest circle to add some dots over some of the etched pattern.

Hope you all fancy trying a double deckle now too!

Happy Crafting.
