Pattern Play

Pattern Play

I'm all about pattern today and as we had a quiet afternoon I managed to get a couple of hours to have a good play with the new Geometric Botany stamp from Altenew.  I was immediately attracted to this set as it reminded me of the pattern books I used to colour as a kid - I loved them, finding the parts of the patterns I wanted to colour, and this set made those feelings rush back!   So I've done 4 very different cards all with a different colouring method.

Card 1 - Watercolour

For this one I stamped and embossed the pattern using Salvaged Patina Glaze and then used my Altenew paints to watercolour (NB I stamped on standard card 300gsm not watercolour card and just didn't make my paint very wet so it didn't warp) I coloured most of the pattern on this one in shades of green and teal (no surprise there lol!)  Once it was dry I trimmed it to fit my card and added a die cut sentiment in a coordinating colour over the top using the Hand Lettered Birthday MFT die.

Card 2 - Waterbased Markers

For the second card I stamped directly onto the front of a square card in black and then used the new Hawaiin Shore Pens from Altenew to colour just using blues and grey and being much more selective about the pattern only colouring 3 elements.   I added a bold square sentimet from Concord and 9th All The Birthdays to finish.  Despite the floral motif the colours and the squareness lends this a more masculine feel.

Card 3 - Stamped Colouring

For this mini card I decided to just colour and cut out one motif and to use the stamp elements that come wth the set to colour it.   I stamped in black and then used pink and purple oxides to stamp the colour (Tattered Rose, Saltwater Taffy, Kitsche Flamingo, Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet and Villainous Potion).   I then stamped the pattern in black onto a mini card base and used foam tape to add the cut out element in the middle and added a stamped sentiment also from All The Birthdays below.

Card 4 - Embossing and Gold Foil Detail

For the last card, which, despite being way out of my colour comfort zone, may be my favourte, I went with very little "colouring" at all.   I stamped and embossed with Saltwater Taffy Glaze and then using the two way glue pen and letting it dry to tacky stage I added some dots of gold foil to the centres of the main motif.   I trimmed around the pattern to give an interesting edge which gives the pattern a more vintage feel.   To add a little more colour I added a strip of saltwater taffy oxide blended direct to the card then used narrow d/s tape to add a foil strip.   I embossed a sentment from Itty Bitty Celebrations onto card blended with more saltwater taffy to keep it all just in the pink and gold.  Perfect for weddings/anniversaries.

Did I say I love this set?????

Hope you're inspired to play with pattern this weekend.
