Solid Background Stencilling

Solid Background Stencilling

I normally have quite a CAS asthetic but sometimes like to go full one and get as much onto one card as I can and this weekend I was in the mood for full on coverage!  I made a couple of different cards using stencils to fill my backgrounds and a die for the focal images, mostly with Waffle Flower's latest collection which is great for this technique and for birthday cards.

Firstly I went for a really Happy Birthday sentiment statement - although I've gone pinks and purples (one of these cards will go to a friend who loves purple) this would be great (minus the bow) for a masculine make in blues or greens.

I really like the new overlapping stencils from Waffle Flower and the Overlapping Happy Birthday die and stencil was the first thing I reached for in this new release.  I stencilled the Happy Birthday repeatedly to fill the front of my card using oxide inks running the word off the edge of one line and starting again on the next (this can make lining up a bit difficult where you don't have the starting letter so sometimes doing it out of order helps - I got a couple of wonky bits but too much perfection takes away from homemade)  If you preferred you could stencil and die cut and line them across the card after cutting.

Once that was complete I die cut the Ribbon Frame die by The Greetery and added pink ink to tone it in - I didn't use the matching stencil as I wanted a flatter look to keep it less busy.  Finished with the new Happy Birthday Script Word Frame Die in purple to tone in with a white background to make it stand out.   Easy to change up the colours for a different look - rainbows would be fabulous!

For the second card I wanted to go full on cupcake so stencilled the Sweet Cupcake Stencil all over my base card at different angles (twice because the first time I didn't line them up properly and had a big gap between the cake and frosting.  So be sure to test on scrap if you're not sure how a stencil lines up first!!)

Once the background was complete I die cut Sweet Cupcake Die and used the stencils in the same colours to shade it in.  I added 3 candles to it and popped it onto a black circle to make it pop from the background and added a cicle of foam behind it for dimension.  Finished with a pair of sentiments from the Hey Cupcake Sentiments Stamp.

Hope that's inspired you to get stencilling some full on backgrounds.

Happy Crafting!
