What's in a snowflake?

What's in a snowflake?

I'm concentrating most of my card making on Christmas cards just now as I know I need 4 times as many as I've made so far this year, so today I'm adding 4 to my stash by batch making with a twist.   This is one of the things I do most years, as I dislike making identical cards, I pick an element to be the focus and then have something to switch out on each card.   For my focus on this batch, I'm using Waffle Flower's Circle Snowflake Shaker Die and adding a different character in the middle.

For the first card, I picked one of the brand new Christmas characters from Stacey Yacula for Purple Onion Deisgns - Melvin the teeny-tiny but oh so perfect snowman.

Melvin fits perfectly into the centre circle of the snowflake die, so here I simply cut the die from Pixie Dust card stock, drew lightly around the centre in pencil so I could work out where to stamp him, then stamped and coloured him with pencils.  The sentiment comes from Mama Elephants Easy Christmas Sentiments which have matching dies but I just cut them into strips on my trimmer to keep the stars on the strip (the dies will cut the stars separately)

As I'm a waste not want not crafter, whilst I had the circles on my desk that come out of the die, I stamped Melvin directly onto them and used alcohol markers to colour on top of the glitter.   This won't damage your markers but the best way to get the colour on is to "dot" it.   These little circles then are perfectly sized for gift tags....

So now to make more of the same but different.   Whilst I do love Stacey Yacula, I am very much drawn to Purple Onion's other designer for this years Christmas release - Shari Bresciani and whilst none of them were a perfect fit for the circle - bits of them were and that's enough (if you want to make cards fast then selecting bits to colour makes for faster batch production!)

For my first one, I picked Lola - I just loved her hat and I gave her eye brows so she could go to the bah-humbug side of Christmas.    I stamped her on white card, coloured with pencils and fussy cut and then poked her through the die so she pops out of it perfectly.   Finished with a sentiment stamped to match the colouring using Waffle Flower's Cozy Holiday Sentiments.

For my second I could not resist Stevie in all his walrus tusk glory!   Again, stamped, fussy cut and poked through the circle so again I only coloured the head.  Finished with a sentiment stamped to match the colouring using Waffle Flower's Cozy Holiday Sentiments.

For my final one, I went with a slightly differnent take on the snowflake circle - I used the "outer" ring, placed that on the card and drew around it so that I could stamp Murray in the middle and work out where to fade him out.   This way you can get a bigger character inside.   It is a little tricker to work around the inner edges of the die, so if this is too much, you can just poke him through the circle and let him cover more of the die cut instead.   The sentiment is another from Mama Elephants Easy Christmas Sentiments

Hope that gives you some ideas of how to colour "bits" of stamps - there are lots of other wreaths and shapes you could have characters pop out of.
