Mole-Themed Valentine’s Day Card in Non-Traditional Colours

Mole-Themed Valentine’s Day Card in Non-Traditional Colours

Hello, Terri here! Today I’m sharing a Mole-themed Valentine’s Day card created with non-traditional Valentine colours. This handmade card features layered die cuts, Distress Ink backgrounds, and adorable stamped images—perfect for anyone who loves creative cardmaking with a twist.

Stamping and Colouring the Mole Images

I started by stamping images from the Mole Lot of Love and Mole Lot of Love Add-On stamp sets onto 80lb super smooth cardstock using an alcohol-friendly ink. The images were coloured with alcohol markers, and I chose soft grey tones for the moles to keep all the facial details clear and visible. To finish the colouring, I added highlights with a white gel pen.

Once complete, the images were die cut using the coordinating A Mole Lot of Love and A Mole Lot of Love Add-On die sets.

Creating a Layered Distress Ink Background

Backgrounds are one of my favourite parts of cardmaking, and this one was so much fun to create! I die cut the Stitched Wavy Backdrop from white cardstock and ink blended Distress Inks in Brushed Corduroy, Gathered Twigs, and Vintage Photo. These warm neutral tones add depth while keeping the design soft and cohesive.

To add texture and interest, I splattered both black and white ink using a small paintbrush.

Adding Grass with Die Cuts and Ink Blending

For the grassy hill, I used the Slimline Grassy Hillside Borders die to cut a strip of grass from white cardstock. I inked it with Mowed Lawn Distress Ink for a fresh pop of colour. The wavy backdrop was trimmed slightly shorter, and the grass was adhered behind the top edge to create a layered scene.

Ink-Blended Sky with Cloud Stencil

To create the sky background, I lightly ink blended Tumbled Glass Distress Ink onto a piece of white cardstock. I then placed the Stratus Cloud Stencil over the panel and blended more ink using the same brush, creating a soft, tone-on-tone cloud effect. After removing the stencil, I added splatters of Liquid Stardust for a subtle shimmer.

Assembling the Valentine’s Day Card Scene

Now it was time to bring everything together. I adhered the sky panel to an A2 notecard, followed by the ground and grassy layers. A Valentine sentiment was stamped in the upper left corner using black ink.

The die-cut mole images were attached using a combination of foam pads and liquid adhesive to add dimension. To finish the card, I added a heart-shaped speech bubble with a small sentiment to the mole digging the hole—such a sweet final touch!
