It was Rick's big sister's big birthday at the weekend so I had to make her a special card and what's better for a big birthday than a big birthday cake????
I wanted to make something interactive, and I know sometimes interactive dies can be intimidating and time consuming, but the Pull 'n Slide Surprise Dies from Lawn Fawn are really one of the easiest mechanisms ever - all you need is 3 folds and your done! As with all Lawn Fawn dies, Kelly puts a really good video together on their YouTube Channel that shows you step-by-step how to put them together, but essentially for this one, you cut the outer frame, two reinforcing strips which are glued to the long edges of this frame, then a back piece and pull tab. You fold the inner part of the frame along the score lines, line up the pull tab with the dip in the centre of the frame and glue the bottom fold to that piece and you have a working mechanism!
I cut my frame from teal card, and my back piece from some patterned paper with birthday candles on. Kelly cuts another piece to go behind her pieces to lift up the pull tab to make it easier to grab but I found it works ok without it too so I just glued mine direct to the card base which I'd covered with some more patterned paper. I stamped two sentiments from the Cheeky Birthday set from Mama Elephant, one on the base piece so it's revealed when you pull it up, and the other on the candle paper so it shows above the cake once opened. You have enough room in the mechanism to put either a die cut or even a gift card too so it's a really handy die for gifting!
To create the cake I die cut the two layers from the Lawn Fawn Build-A-Cake Die set in a pale pink card and added icing with pink and purple glitter card. I switched out the candles in the set for a number candle to mark the special birthday using The Greetery's Cake Pops Number Dies, cut from white glitter card and coloured with copics. I used the same marker to colour the glitter card for the "sister" cut using a small alphabet die and the plate which comes from the Build-A-Cake Add-on Die, I just trimmed off the foot on the cake stand so it would fit better.
With the number dies you can make a cake for any age and they last longer than the real one we had at the party!
Happy Crafting!
